After hoisting our neighbor's magnanimously huge ladder up to the side of our house and getting it safely adjusted (after wedging one leg up on a wooden block--that's safe, right?), I intrepidly began to climb. I had a snow brush/ice scraper in one hand and a can of cheap-o bee spray in the other. I started banging around in the formerly bee-infested eave (we've been spraying it for 3 days now) and low and behold about 5 bees flew out. One stung me on my elbow--which I had instinctively raised in front of my face while squealing like a girl.

Now, you must know, my mother is deathly allergic to bees. She has to carry an Epi-pen bee sting kit with her at all times and administer a shot within 20 minutes of her sting in order for her throat not to close and suffocate her. I have wondered my whole life whether or not I would have to do the same.

Back to my stinging story. I checked my arm to make sure the bee and stinger weren't lodged in my arm, then my adrenaline kicked in. I decided that even if I only had 20 minutes left to live, at least I'd make sure the bees nest was taken care of. I ran inside the house, found some Children's Benadryl in the medicine cabinet and took a way-too-huge swig.

I decided that if I was gonna take one for the team, at least I'd finish the game and come out the winner. With the clock ticking, I went back outside to the ladder, and armed with Dan's bike flashlight in my mouth and his wooden hockey stick, I wreaked havoc on the bees nests. There were two bee nests each the size of salad plates that I scraped out of the eaves, picked up with tongs and tied up in plastic bags, then deposited in the garbage can. I climbed the ladder once more, sprayed the area again, then climbed down the ladder to find someone to tell about my fatal sting when I realized I was breathing just fine, a little tingly from the adrenaline (and Benadryl), but not headed for the grave just yet.

And now I understand why Dan dances, screams, and shouts when he gets a sting, and why they are called a sting, those things HURT! But at least there are a few hundred less bees in our neighborhood.

Liam got this birthday crown at school yesterday, and he has made it a permanent fixture on his head ever since. I needed to get something from his room last night after bedtime, and there it was crumpled yet still perched on top.

He’s turning 4 tomorrow. This is the first birthday where he really KNOWS that it’s his birthday. He’s been counting down all week with signs that he and Jenna made. He takes off the last number tomorrow. His excitement is adorable and infectious. We can’t wait for the big day either…

Africa coture

All ladies have to wear skirts while we are on the Mully Children's Family campus in June. Then we will leave all our clothes at MCF.

The only skirts I own are wool or denim for fall/winter--way too hot for Africa. I shopped some thrift stores, asked friends and family for light-weight knee-length skirts to take, but came up empty.

So mom Hoffman and I went to Wal-Mart and she bought $2.98 worth of fabric off their clearance, and I am sewing the 3 skirts I will take, wear, then leave. That is less than $1 per skirt!

Here is the first of my labours of love to leave at MCF.

I am a self-taught rogue sewer and don't use patterns--or if I do I make my own. But I am totally enjoying creating and improvising, using math and problem-solving. I think I'll add some pockets to this one and try a different shape/tactic on skirt #2.

Moms and grandmas--suggestions are welcome for skirts #2 and #3. Grandma Dunkin--do you recognize the lace trim at the bottom?

Sunday afternoon our family went to visit some special guests at the Cascade library. I dragged everyone over there so we could sit in a hot room for nearly 55 minutes listening and learning all about the Iditarod, sled dog racing, sleds, Alaska, and all kinds of great pioneer stuff. I took Liam and Elli up to the front of the room to sit on the floor with them, but after about 20 min they were done and had wandered to the back of the room with Dan. I was still sitting there open-mouthed and just loving it all. The best part was petting the dogs. I love dogs. I could have taken them all home with me. We used to have a Siberian Husky named Sasha when we lived in the snowy mounts of Colorado. Just a really fun family outing...at least for me! Woof.

THE Scott's NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS EVE

'Twas the night before Christmas Eve, and all day in our house

Two of three children were spreading crumbs for a mouse;

The stockings had been ripped off the mantel with flair,

It really is amazing that I still have a head of (golden wheat blond #137) hair;

The girls asleep in their cribs, Liam kept getting out of bed,

Needing to go potty, wash his hands, and get more books to be read;

I was in my PJ’s, Dan had his computer on his lap,

Barely awake, soooo tired and longing for a nap,

When across the street we heard a clang and clatter,

And peeked through the blinds to see if anything was the matter.

Encore as a puppy would’ve been there in a flash,

But he’s getting a little slower, there’s pause (“paws” too cheesy?) in his dash.

The moon couldn’t be seen through the rain, we had no snow

Making murky and muddy all the ground below,

When, what to my swollen, puffy, crusty, sleep-deprived eyes should appear,

But the neighbor’s house adorned with three country-ish Christmas trees, two life-sized Toyland torch candles, a spiral tree, some wreaths, a Christmas flag, a blinking candy cane, and a lone reindeer,

With a roll of my eyes, I shut the blinds quick!

I hate tacky decorations. They just make me sick.

I laughed when I saw them, in spite of THEM, not of myself;

And looked at our tastefully decorated living room shelf.

I sighed a big sigh and just shook my head,

And knew that within my own house there was no tackiness to dread;

I shook it off and started doing some pre-Christmas work,

Filled stockings, sorted presents, and hung a curtain so Liam couldn’t lurk,

But I was foiled, Liam got me, “need a tissue for my nose”,

And like a rocket off a launch from the couch Dan arose ;

He sprang to hallway, blocked Liam’s’ view, got a tissue

And marched him back to his room saying “good night, we love you, we’ll miss you”.

The casserole’s made, OJ stirred, presents sorted just right

"I’m tired, it’s 8:52, and I’m going nite-night."

Christmas table

I used my Pfaltzgraff Winterberry dishes to decorate and hostess a table at our ladies' Christmas banquet. There were over 650 ladies there. It was a great evening--I just loved decorating and serving the lovely ladies that signed up at my table--and they enjoyed taking home a package of Starbucks Christmas blend to remember the evening by. Our speaker presented a joyful and very evangelistic message about the Christ of Christmas. There was one lady at my table who was Catholic and friends had been trying and trying to get her to come to church. This banquet was her first time at Ada--I hope she was as blessed by the evening as I was to be a part of it.

Elli and the rest of the kids actually slept in this morning much to the surprise of those who tried to call to wish her happy birthday. But first thing before breakfast... OPEN PRESENTS!!!

Elli is thrilled with her new Dora the Explorer roller skates. She also got a Dora backpack from Grandma Ellie and Grand-Bob.

Pumpkin Patch

We drove a few minutes past church to a local farmer's house where "Pumpkins for Sale" was advertised.

Just pick out what you want, leave money in the slot, and off you go! We never saw another person the whole time we were there--had the place to ourselves! For $20 we got 4 large pumpkins, 8 baby-sized pumpkins, 4 pie pumpkins, 5 butternut squash and 3 acorn squash. They are being carved...more pix to come. Check out the Flikr for complete photos of our trip to the pumpkin patch!

The boys have started putting the railing around the deck. It is tall (built to commercial code rather than just residential--that means 42 inches high instead of just 36), thick, chunky, sturdy. Hopefully everyone will be able to sleep well knowing it is going to be a super safe place for the kids to play.

Yesterday morning Jenna and I had to take Liam to the dentist again. One of his other teeth was affected by his fall a few weeks ago. It turned brown. It needed to come out.

Jenna and I were talking outside the examining room as Liam was getting his dose of Novocain from the largest needle EVER. This is the worst part of parenting: knowing that you are bringing your child into a place where he will feel pain. It is the worst. The worst. He whimpers as the needle punctures; we were told this is the worst part. Jenna and I know that this is best for him. The tooth has to go, or it will cause more trouble down the road. But knowing that Liam will feel pain and discomfort a few days just kills us.

He knew even as we were driving to the dentist what would happen when he got there. Liam however is one of the bravest people I know. He sat there and took it like a man. Plus he got to pick three toys out of the box for his bravery; that's always a plus. I was amazed at how quickly the tooth came out. The dentist is a saint (except for making us wait for an hour and a half in the waiting room.) She was so encouraging to Liam.

It is almost too obvious where this takes my mind, if I liken God to a Father. I won't expound on that except to say this. God loves me and seeks the best for me even when it seems like the opposite. I am loved. Also, to all our moms and dads - how did you do it?! We love you.

Jenna snapped the picture on our way home. The whole morning must have taken a ton out of Liam. He fell asleep in his car seat. Look at that sticker! You can't see it in the picture, but his left hand is clutching a yo-yo, his right hand holds a race car.

The Deck Project has Begun!

The wood is here. It's a beautiful fall day in Grand Rapid. Greg had the day off. I had the day off.

So what else was there to do but destroy our current deck and make room for the new one.

You'll notice in several pictures how ROTTEN the old deck was... literally it is by the grace of God that we never collapsed the thing. Anyway, the Flickr badge to the left of this post has the pics.... enjoy.

Liam and the Lost Tooth....

Yesterday morning Jenna and the kids were making breakfast, having fun with eggs and oatmeal. Liam slipped and came crahsing down on the counter. His front tooth was bent pretty far back. After a trip to the dentist, who by the way was a super lady, Liam has one less tooth.

He was brave. He was a trooper. He never cried, just watched Diego and Blue on the flat screen above him (don't you love pediactric dentistry in the 21st century!). He came home with a bag of toys and two new tooth brushes!

Liam likes to play airplane... all the windows are drawn and no lights can be put on because it's dark in airplanes. He's watching a video because you do that on airplanes....

He also brings everything that can be moved out of his room and piles it high - his luggage.

He wanted to do this at 7:30 this morning. At least he has an imagination, right?

Our kids love the Cedarmont Kids - Thank you Ben and Michelle for finding this "great" Christian children's group. Thanks to the grandparents for stocking our home with - count 'em - 7 DVDs. The Cedarmont Kids have infiltrated our home, and our kids are hooked on this group. If you've never heard or seen the Cedarmont Kids, you're really missing out. Just think of all your favorite Sunday School songs sung in various locations by kids wearing costumes, outfits from the 80's, or playing at playgrounds. The video below is Liam singing one of his favorites. Note: we did NOT set him up for this. This was his own idea. Enjoy!
